A Dog's day     From the Farm
From the Farm to the Fort- Fort Greene's farmer's market

The Fort Greene farmer's market comes alive every Saturday from 8am to 5pm on Washington Park at Dekalb Avenue, at the foot of the entrance to Fort Greene Park. Four years running, "the season" was originally from Spring to Fall. It now has extended to fair weather in the colder months, with offerings generally pared down to baked goods, meats, eggs, and whatever else is fresh.

Out shopping this weekend with mom, I saw that the grower's brought out their very best for sale. Apples, cider, fresh seafood, free range turkey, chicken, beef and pork, herbs, salad greens, flowers, milk, honey, butter, veggies, pies and cakes, bread and other baked goods were all on display at the various tables.

I got a chance to interview, siblings Jennie and Albert Wilklow, one of the family owned farms that has participated in this greenmarket since its inception. Wilklow Orchards, in Highland Park, NY, has the coveted corner space on Washington Park and Dekalb Avenue. They manage the farm and outdoor markets with their dad.

Having been a loyal customer for years, they have some of the freshest produce with the largest variety offered by any vender there. Jennie, is in charge of the greenhouse and brings out fresh plants and flowers for sale. They bake fresh donuts, muffins, breads, and pies, and the long line in front of their stand speaks volumes as to the quality and consistency of their offerings over the years. Everything is done on premesis and made without preservatives. They also participate on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at Borough Hall (Brooklyn Heights farmer's market) and at Grand Army Plaza (Park Slope farmer's market)-selling beef only.

If you don't want to take the trek to Chelsea market, come down to Fort Greene and choose fresh produce from the grower's hands to your. Tell them HistoricBrooklyn.com sent you.
